Co je nového k otestování v R7 ...

What to test in Reason 7

The Reason versions we are testing have a lot of debugging and logging code running, so they are MUCH slower than the relase versions. You can't compare performance between these two, and your full productions song will probably not be able to play in the testing version of Reason 7 (at least not at the same buffer setting). Towards the end of the beta testing period we will release "Release Candidate" versions of Reason without the debugging and logging code. These versions should have more or less the same performance as previous released versions of Reason.

How to write a bug report

A good bug report is like a recipe for cooking. It states the ingredients and some steps to reproduce the bug you have found. Here are some tips on how to write bug reports:

Write a list of steps on how to reproduce the bug, like this:
New song
Create a SubTractor
Automate Filter Type
etc.
If the bug requires a lot of setup (routing, recording specific audio etc) please attach the song file you test rather than writing a lot of detailed instructions. This way you can reduce the list to "1) Open attached song, 2) Do this".
Please attach any screenshots, videos etc that help explain the bug. Glitches in audio or GUi can be hard to aexplain in words!
It is almost always a good idea to include the logs for a (the) session where you could reproduce the bug. There are instructions on the Report a bug-page where you can find the logs. The logs have a timestamp in their name, to help you find the right one.
If you got an assert message (triggered by the debugging code) there will be a folder on the desktop with the logs we need. Please zip the folder and attach to the bug report.
Installation

It's OK to keep previous versions of Reason installed. Since the Reason 7 folder will be called "Reason Beta", it can coexist with the Reason folder. The preferences are stored in a separate file and should not be overwritten either. However, the release candidate preferences will overwrite your previous preferences. Please make sure to make a backup copy of them before installing a release candidate version.

Reason: Download the new Factory Sound Bank. Put it in the Reason Beta folder, along with a copy of, or an alias to, the Orkester sound bank from your current installation.
Reason Essentials: There is no updated sound bank yet. Please put a copy of, or an alias to, your existing Factory Sound Bank in the Reason essentials beta folder.
Like previous Reason versions, Reason 7 has a drag'n'drop installation on Mac. Some elements will be installed at first launch, and will require a restart.

About file formats

Note: We do not guarantee that songs saved in this beta version will be readable in future Reason or Reason Essentials versions! Play it safe and keep your "beta testing songs" separate from your "real" Reason songs.

General behavior

A lot of code has been changed, which could have unknown consequences. Please use the program as much as possible and look for anomalies. This could be things looking weird or behaving in unexpected ways when you make changes on screen. Window handling, dragging, drawing, selecting menu items, changing parameters… everything, more or less!

Neither Reason, Reason essentials or Authorizer are fully localized yet (March 12).
Please do not report cases on missing translations!

How do I test this?

Just run Reason 7 - a lot! Do everything you normally do in Reason.
Open and save songs (remember to work on copies of your songs while beta testing). Make sure that all device and routings are the same.
Run Reason in various sample rates.
Feature #1: Authorizing your computer

As before, Reason can run in Demo Mode or authorized by Ignition Key, Balance or Internet Verification (login). But now you can also authorize your computer for use with Reason 7, with no need for a hardware key or internet connection.

Authorization includes your Reason license and Rack Extensions.
Authorization is done from your new account pages, with the function "Authorize Computer and Keys". During the betatest period, we will have parallel account pages to serve both the old and the new system. You wiil be given the option to select which page to use. If you need to revert your selection, please restart your browser (which will delete the cookie).
This can be done for one computer at a time. If you need to authorize another computer, you need to deauthorize the current one first.
Pllease note: During the beta testing, not all beta testers will get a licence that is possible to write to a key. To check what license you've got, please go to your account page. If your Reason 7 beta license is "online only", you will not be able to authorize your Ignition Key, Balance, or computer during beta testing.

Typically, you authorize the computer you most often use for music work. If you have an ignition Key or Balance, you can use these for when you need to run Reason on other computers. Note that while the license agreement allows you to install Reason on as many computers you want, you are only allowed to run it on one computer at a time.

How do I test this?

Authorize and deauthorize your computer several times.
Try authorizing another computer.
Verify that the web pages display everything correctly, and that the ignition key/ Balance still work as usual.
Feature #2: Editing audio clips - inline and in Comp Edit

If an audio clip plays back a single take (recording), it will open for editing inline, in Arrange mode. This mode of editing lets you change the timing of the audio, by moving slice markers or quantizing. Please test the following:

Opening audio clips inline

To open an audio clip for editing, double click it. If it's a Single Take clip, it will open inline. You can also open a clip by selecting it and pressing [Return].
To close an open clip, press [Return], [Esc] or click elsewhere in the arrangement.
Slice Markers: Select, drag, draw, delete and nudge

To adjust the timing of one slice (e.g. a recorded drum beat), click and drag the slice marker. The slice marker will be magnetic to the snap grid, if Snap is on.
If you select a range of slice markers and drag one of the markers, the whole range will be stretched as if it were a single slice.
To move all selected slice markers by an equal amount, click and drag the bar at the bottom of the clip, or nudge with the computer keyboard.
Quantize audio clips or selected slices

If a clip is in Single Take mode (and has Stretch enabled) you can select it and use the regular Quantize function to quantize the slice markers. You can also open the clip and quantize selected slice markers.
Split at slices

This function is enabled on the Edit menu when a clip is open inline and one or more slice markers are selected. It will split the clip at the slice marker positions. You can then do clip editing like reverse, transpose or mute on the split clips.
Bounce Clip to REX loop

This function creates a REX loop from the open audio clip. The REX loop will be self-contained in the song and shown in the Sample list in the Tool window.
If a REX loop is selected in the Sample list, you can click "To Rack" to immediately load it into a new Dr Octo REX device in the rack.
Please test REX loop "round trips" - what happens if you bounce to REX and then import the REX file to an audio track?
If you have ReCycle, please create REX files of the same audio files in that program and compare the results with Reason.
Opening clips in Comp Edit

If a clip plays more than one recording, it is in Comp Mode. This is indicated by a symbol on the clip. Double clicking a comp mode clip will open it in Comp Edit (Edit Mode).
A Single Take clip can also be opened in Comp Edit, by first double clicking it, and then clicking the "Open in Comp Edit" button that appears in the track list.
You can also open any audio clip in Comp Edit by selecting it and selecting "Enter Edit Mode" from the Options menu (or pressing Command / Ctrl - E, like before).
Closing a clip in Comp Edit

You close a clip by pressing [Return] or [Esc] or by clicking the Close button in Comp Edit. This will also return to Arrange Mode.
Bounce button

The Bounce button in Comp Edit is enabled if the clip is in Comp Mode (more than one comp row is assigned for playback). Clicking this will bounce the clip to a new recording and turn it into a Single Take clip.
If you now press [Return] twice, the clip will close and then open inline, for slice editing.
Single Take Mode buttons

The previous Single Mode/Comp Mode selector has been removed. Instead, each comp row has a Single Take button.
If you turn a Single Take button on, the clip will only play that comp row (and can be opened inline for slice editing).
Turning the Single Take button off again returns it to comp mode, with all Cuts and assignments intact.
More ideas for testing Audio Editing:

Try all new audio editing features as described above!
Also, please try all audio features that were available in Reason 6.5 and verify that these still work as intended: Stretch clips, disable/enable stretch, transpose, bounce, join, split, tempo automation, etc.
Try the old and the new audio features in combination. What if I join two clips, where I have edited slices in one of them, and the other is stretched, etc?
Feature #3: Import Audio Files - new formats

Reason now supports more audio formats, for import to audio tracks and for loading in sampler devices.

The supported audio formats depend on the platform:

On a Mac, the new import formats include mp3, m4a, mp4, aac, caf, aifc and many more.
On a Windows computer, the new import formats are mp3, mp4, aac and wma.
Only mono and stereo files are supported.

In some cases, Reason reads metadata from the file. For example, if you have specified a tempo for an mp3 file (in the "BPM" ID3 tag), this will be read on import, and the audio clip will be stretched to the current song tempo.

If you're using samples in one of the new formats and move your song between platforms, you should self-contain your samples first.

How do I test this?

Import lots of files and check that they play back in the right tempo where applicable.
Load samples of various formats, into sampler devices.
Selfcontain and un-selfcontain samples.
Move songs with imported samples between Mac and Windows computers.
Feature #4: External MIDI Instrument

This device on the Create:Instruments menu lets you send MIDI notes and controller data to external MIDI devices. Add it like any Reason instrument - it gets a track with a note lane as usual. MIDI output and channel are set on the device panel.

Apart from notes, the EMI device supports pitch bend, aftertouch, program change and MIDI CC 0-119. All these can be automated and combinator controlled.

There is one assignable CC knob on the front panel, for easy recording of parameter sweeps etc. You can also use Remote Overrides to assign controls on a keyboard or control surface to different MIDI CC parameters.

On the back of the EMI device are CV inputs for controlling external MIDI instruments with the Matrix, RPG-8 or other CV devices in Reason. You can also CV-control the currently assigned MIDI CC.

The EMI device should remember its last MIDI output selection, and reconnect when this becomes available.

If hanging notes occur, there is a Send All Notes Off function on the Options menu (keyboard shortcut [!]).

How do I test this?

Hook up your old ARP 2600 and have some fun!
Record and automate MIDI CC and program change.
Play your external MIDI instrument from a Matrix, RPG-8 or other CV device.
Put the EMI device in a Combinator and assign Combi rotaries to MIDI CC.
Disconnect and re-connect MIDI interfaces and devices.
Play back MIDI and record the audio from you external synth. Check the timing (with and without monitoring activated).
Try using lots of EMI devices at the same time. What if they're set to the same MIDI channel?
Try using external MIDI devices while Reason is in ReWire mode.
Feature #5: Send MIDI Clock

Reason can now send MIDI clock, for synchronizing drum machines, external sequencers or other units. You select the MIDI port for this on the Preferences:Advanced page. There you can also set an clock offset, if the external device plays back consistently ahead of or behind Reason.

Note that you turn Send MIDI Clock on or off on the Options menu, just like the other Sync options.

Reason sends clock, Start, Stop and Continue messages. It will also send Song Position Pointer data - if your external sequencer or drum machine can read SPP, they will stay in sync even if you move the song position in Reason or start playback from the middle of the song.

Mixer: Level fader and Pan in rack devices

The rack devices for Mix Channels and Audio Tracks now have a duplicate of the channel level fader and pan control. This makes it easier to do quick mixing adjustments while you're working with sound design and effect settings in the rack.

How do I test this?

Hook up your old MPC-60 and have some fun!
Compare the timing of the external sequencer/drum machine with Reason's click. Adjust the MIDI Clock Output Offset so that they match.
Record the sound of a synced device.
What happens if you have several Reason songs open, with different tempo settings?
What happens if tempo is automated in Reason?
If you have issues with MIDI output in Reason and need to troubleshoot, we recommend using MIDI Monitor on OS X or MIDIOX on Windows to monitor what is being sent and received on your MIDI ports.

Feature #6: Mixer: Output Buses and Parallel Channels

Mixer channels can be routed to an output bus, for submixing and bus effects.

Routing is done from the Output Bus popup menu below the fader in the channel strip.

You can also select several channels and route them to a bus from the "Route" submenu on the Edit menu - or press [Command] / [Ctrl] - [G] to quickly route them all to a new bus.

Buses can be routed to other buses.

Mute and solo will automatically adapt to bus routing, so that you hear the channels you expect when you solo a bus, or vice versa.

If a channel is routed to a bus, its FX Send levels are adjusted according to the bus level setting. For example, this lets you fade out a drum bus without leaving the snare drum reverb audible.

If you select a mixer channel and select "Create Parallel Channel" from the Edit or context menu, a new mixer channel will be created. This is connected to the first one and plays the same audio, as if you had split the signal before the channel strips.

The parallel connection can also be done manually, using the Parallel Output jacks on the back of the channel devices in the rack.

Use parallel channels for setting up different parallel effect chains (parallel processing), alternative sounds and more.

Note that output buses can also have parallel channels!

How do I test this?

Please test all types of connections - bus routing, parallel signals, regular inputs, insert fx, direct outputs - in all combinations!
Be aware that it is possible to create feedback loops in the mixer by doing some exotic routing (just like in the rack). Keep your monitoring levels low when experimenting!
Feature #7: Mixer: Spectrum EQ window

The Spectrum EQ window shows the Main Mixer EQ and filter settings for a mixer channel as a curve, and lets you make EQ setting by clicking and dragging points on the curve.

It also contains a Spectrum Analyzer, showing the frequency content of the selected channel's audio.

Open the Spectrum EQ by clicking the button in the EQ section of the mixer channel strip, or the corresponding button on the rack device. You can also open it from the Window menu or by pressing [F2]. Normally, the Spectrum EQ follows the track/channel selection, so that you always see the channel you're working with.

Please note:

This isn't a separate EQ - it's an alternate way of controlling the EQ in the mixer channel strip.
The Spectrum Analyzer shows the signal before the fader but after the EQ and insert fx.
For the Master Section, the Spectrum EQ window shows the Spectrum Analyzer only (since there is no EQ for the Master Section).
How do I test this?

Use the EQ and the Spectrum Analyzer for mixing and sound design!
Try different sample rates.
Try showing and hiding the Spectrum EQ window in many different ways.
Try automating the EQ parameters.

Feature #9: Smaller improvements to the Authorizer

The Authorizer can now show your Rack Extensions sorted after Name, Manufacturer or Install Date. The last option is useful when you're downloading, since it shows the currently downloading R.E.s at the top of the list.

The Authorizer window can be resized.

Feature #10: Audiomatic Retro Transformer

Not yet released.
