The RME IMO...(I am using the FF800) is not hands down anywhere, but the best 'all around'.
OK I did a test recently here in the studio...with RME Fireface 800, Mackie, MOTU 896HD (which is the closest thing to a traveler I tested) and Tascam FW1804.
The Mackie was from the FW option on the ONYX...but last week I had the Onyx FW400 here for a couple of days to compare it to the FF800.
BEST A/D...IMO:
Mackie..(Onyx FW card and FW400) Ultra clean, very pleasant.
RME next. Clean
Tascam 1804 Clean similar to RME
MOTU 896HD Last.
Best D/A...IMO
MOTU...definitely hands down
RME next..Clean
Mackie FF400 (although this was 'next' in line after the RME, it was a noticable step down.)
Mackie Onyx
Tascam 1804
Mackie D/A are scooped and REALLY bright. Some top end on recorded vocals or cymbals just hurt the ears...honest.
The MOTU had the worst A/D (but usuable if not a little smeary) But the most pleasant and clear D/A
RME is solid....clean AD and D/A and I really wanted the best of both worlds..(needed actually) without dumping a ton more into external converters.
Preamps:
ONYX the best without question IMO
RME
MOTU
Tascam.
Those were my opinion and observations. I had the Interfaces here for a week both tracking and mixing. Your milieage WILL vary.
